Samsung just can’t stop announcing new products, as the new Galaxy S4 Active has now been unveiled, joining the Galaxy S4 Mini from last week, and a pair of new Galaxy Tab 3 tablets too. Amazingly, it has planned a launch event for June 20 in London, so it’s nowhere near done for the month either.
The Galaxy S4 Active has been the subject of several rumours already, but it’s still a surprise to see it launched ahead of the event. The second spin-off of the best selling Galaxy S4 flagship phone, the Active is aimed at the niche market of those who lead, “active lifestyles,” and need a phone which can keep up.
While Samsung’s marketing department wants to think this is who will buy the S4 Active, many of those who do will only be wanting a phone which they can use in the bath without fear of ruining it if it gets a dunking. The S4 Active has a IP67 rating, so it can survive a 30 minute trip underwater, down to a depth of one meter.
Samsung has equipped the phone with a 8 megapixel camera, which also has a special Aqua Mode, which improves its ability to take pictures beneath the waves. This is one of several spec alterations from the Galaxy S4, and others include the screen being an LCD panel, and the size and weight of the handset being increased. It’s still equipped with a 5-inch, 1080p display and 1.9GHz quad-core processor, plus Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean and all manner of Samsung software features.
The phone goes on sale in August, but has so far only been confirmed for America and Sweden, and no price has been given either. We’d expect to hear more on a UK release date on June 20.
