BlackBerry 9720 now up for pre-order in the UK, costs £180 SIM-free

Blackberry 9720 phoneThe BlackBerry 9720 was announced a few weeks ago, and although the company shared plenty about the phone’s specification, it was silent about the price and final release date. Now, thanks to Clove Technology and Carphone Warehouse, all the details have been revealed.

If you want to pick up your BlackBerry 9720 without a contract, then Clove Technology has you covered. It’s yours to buy for £180 SIM-free, which is a reasonable price, considering the BlackBerry Q5 – the cheapest BlackBerry 10 device – costs £330 SIM-free.

BlackBerry 10 is the company’s latest mobile operating system, while the BlackBerry 9720 runs BlackBerry OS 7.1, which has essentially been replaced by BB10. Not that it matters, as OS 7.1 hardware still outsells BlackBerry 10, despite there being three high-spec phones from which to choose.

The 9720’s spec is relatively basic. It has a 2.8-inch screen with a 480 x 360 pixel resolution, a simple 800MHz processor, 512MB of RAM and a 5-megapixel camera. The 9720’s standout feature is its physical QWERTY keyboard, a rare feature in this touchscreen-obsessed world.

So, how about buying the phone with a contract? Carphone Warehouse has the phone up for pre-order with O2, Orange, Vodafone and T-Mobile. The cheapest option is through O2, where the phone is free with a two-year, £11 per month contract. This gives you 50 minutes per month, unlimited SMS and 100MB of BlackBerry data.
