The turn of a brand new year always signals an air of anticipation within the mobile phone industry, but 2017 should be especially eventful.
From new models, fresh charging methods and cheaper SIM-exclusive deals to increased payment capabilities and faster connection speeds, the extent to which technology can advance over a 365-day period is truly remarkable.
So as we delve into what is sure to be an exciting New Year, what launches and announcements can we look forward to over the space of the next twelve months?
Apple’s Tenth Anniversary
With the first generation iPhone released back in June 2007, this year marks the revolutionary handset’s tenth anniversary, and the global goliath that is Apple is expected to pull out the stops to toast the occasion.
With rumours widespread, nobody can be certain regarding the release date of the hugely anticipated iPhone 8 right now, but rumour has it that the device will be completely redesigned with a curved, edge-to-edge display.
July 2017 – A beta version of iOS 11 is widely tipped to be unveiled at Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference
September 2017 – Both the iPhone 6 and iPhone 7 were released on September 19th and September 16th respectively.
Samsung to Come Back Fighting?
One of the most infamous headlines of 2016 was the recall of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7. In some cases, battery faults led to the generation of excessive heat that resulted in fires.
Samsung are expected to come back fighting in 2017 with their Galaxy S8 model. Tipped to integrate the home button on the display, incorporate a USB-C port for faster charging as well as removing the headphone jack, the release should precede the iPhone 8.
March – April 2017 – Three of the last four Galaxy S models were released in April. The most recent Galaxy S7 was released in March.
February 2017 – March 2017 – The Mobile World Congress is taking place in Barcelona from February 27th to March 2nd. Samsung have used the event to reveal the Galaxy S models in the past.
The Return of an Old Favourite
An entire generation of twenty-somethings nostalgically reminisce about their days spent playing Snake II on their Nokia 3310s. After several years in the wilderness, the Finnish company are expected to gate-crash the smartphone industry with a vengeance in 2017.
With as many as five Android models rumoured to be released throughout 2017, most notably the Nokia D1C and Nokia E1, the mid-budget devices are expected to be fitted with Snapdragon 652 chips with 2-4GB of RAM.
February 2017 – March 2017 – The aforementioned Nokia devices are widely rumoured to be unveiled at the 2017 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona – February 27th to March 2nd.
